What Is a Bux Party?

If you’re unfamiliar with the term, you should know a bux party, or bucks party is the party future grooms have before their big day. Depending on where you find yourself geographically, you will find this sort of event under different names. In the US, you will find it as a bachelor party. Australia has these events as bucks (or bux) nights, while the British know them as stag parties. However, these all have the same purpose: to offer the future husband one last night of incredible fun.

The origins

These parties have their origins in the 19th century. The official definition from the Oxford English Dictionary of stag nights is a black-tie event in celebration of the groom and the bride, usually hosted by the father of the groom. Although the party has since evolved to more casual events, and the emphasis falls on the groom, these parties are still a pre-wedding celebration.
However, these events have their origins as early as the 5th century. Similar celebrations we see in Spartan culture, and many others as well.

Bucks parties today

Today, bucks parties are heavily focusing on making the groom feel their best. These are men-only events and, in the past, these were organized with a night before the groom’s big day. However, many have come to the conclusion that because of the party’s nature, this may not be the perfect time to hold a bucks party. Today, it’s important to organize the groom’s party with a decent amount of time prior to their big night. Usually, alcohol is involved, and you want your best buddy to actually be present during the ceremony and reception. Ideally, these parties are organized by the groom’s best friends two weeks before the wedding day.

What do people do at bucks parties?

Usually, these sorts of parties ask for three basic things: alcohol, friends and food. But, as of lately, grooms and their friends go for more intricate parties, events that also involve one activity. These vary from paintball to climbing, biking, swimming, golf, and so on. Many grooms even go for classier events, where the alcohol is kept at minimum levels and female entertainers lack. Gentlemen’s’ club type of events is growing in popularity by the day.

Who is organizing these parties?

These parties are usually organized by the groom’s best men. Ideally, the crew will discuss with both the groom and guests and will decide what type of event they will be having. The schedule and activities are also previously discussed with all the parties involved. As a rule of thumb, the cost of the night will be split between the guests and the groom will be left out of this entire deal. It’s their time to lay back and relax. Plus, they already have a wedding to organize and pay for. If you are invited to a bucks night, make sure you are up to date with all developments and activities. This will help you dress properly and make a realistic budget for the night.
